Sibling To Be

Geared to boys and girls ages 3-7 but any age child can attend
90-minute program to help siblings prepare for their role as big brothers or sisters.
Class includes learning about newborns, caring fort the baby talking about feelings, visiting the nursery and a celebration party

Babysitting Workshop

For boys and girls ages 11 and up
Saturdays, October 2, December 54: 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Abington Memorial Hospital Lenfest Pavilion Grill, Rooms P & G
This six-hour program teaches young people to become more qualified babysitter.
Covers basic child care, age-appropriate activities, how to handle family routines and emergency situations, and more.
Conducted by Child, Home & Community, Inc. for Abington Memorial Hospital

Healthy KidZone

For boys and girls ages 10-14 and their families.
Coming in the Fall of 2010
Held at the Abington YMCA, 1073 Old York Road, Abington
This eight-week program features nutrition education for both parents and kids and supervised exercise sessions for kids. Supervised activities, group discussions, suggestions and encouragement aimed at developing new and healthy approaches to eating and daily activities. Includes one-on-one and group sessions with a YMCA exercise specialist and a Holy Redeemer registered dietitian. Parents/guardians must attend designated
sessions.
Cost: $125 for YMCA members; $160 for non-members and includes a two-month YMCA General Membership

Life Guarding/CPR/First Aid Certification Course

For boys and girls 15 years or older, who are able to complete a standard swim test on the first day, including a 300-yad swim using the front crawl, breast, and back strokes and dive to the bottom of the pool (12 feet) to retrieve a weighted brick

Alateen

For young people 12-18 years old whose lives have been affected by alcoholism either in a family member or a close friend.
Offers a place to discuss feelings with other teens in the same situation.

Building the Family

Parent support group designed as a follow-up to "Focus on Motherhood." (below)
Provides young parents with resources essential to raising healthy children and gives an opportunity to deal with parenting concerns and ask questions.

Focus on Motherhood for Pregnant Teens and Young Adults

For pregnant teens and young adults, fathers-to-be, and their support persons.
Prepare for childbirth in a comprehensive childbirth program by focusing on pre-natal care and options for giving birth and infant care once the baby arrives. Life skills and decision making are explored along with infant health and immunization needs, nutrition, breast feeding, and safety issues in baby care.
12-week program
No charge.
Held at Abington Memorial Hospital, Dixon Building, Classroom A/B.
Programs run Wednesdays, 7:00-9:00 p.m.   Spring 2010 February 17-May 5

Nar-Anon/Narateen Family Groups

12-step recovery program for families and friends of those who are addicts or use drugs.
For young person, brother, sister, friend, parent, and spouse of a "user."
Help is available for those who have found evidence or have even a
     vague suspicion that someone close may have a drug problem.

Stresses sharing experiences rather than giving advice and emphasizes
     anonymity for the user and those who care about him or her. First
     names only are used.
Weekly meetings available free of chare and without prior arrangement.
Local meetings at Jenkintown United Methodist Church, Fellowship
     Hall, Walnut Lane & Summit Ave., Jenkintown. Meeting at 8:00 p.m.
     Also meets Wednesdays 8:00 p.m. at Church on the Mall,

N.O.T. on Smoking (Not On Tobacco)

For teens who are trying to quit or reduce tobacco use.
Free 10-week program from the American Lung Association to create an environment for open communication about goal setting, stress management, and coping. Also covers nutrition and interpersonal skills.
Refreshments served.

Safe Harbor

For grieving teens, children, and families.
Provides a safe place for all family members to share their experiences as they move through the grief and healing process following the loss of a loved one through death.
Assigns teens and children to one of several age-appropriate groups while parents or guardians meet separately to learn more about how to support the grieving child or teen. Groups are facilitated by a number of professionals, including teachers, nurses, social workers, and psychologists.
No cost for program.
Game room for teens includes fooseball and air hockey. Older children also experience guided group conversation time.
Meets 6:30-8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays (participants come once every other week) at Abington Memorial Health Center's Schilling Campus, Pennwood Building, 4th floor, 2500 Maryland Road, Willow Grove.

SUSAN Students Understanding Sexual Assault Now

SUSAN is a peer-based, interactive program for young women, ages 14-21 to increase awareness of sexual assault situations and provide resource information on accessing medical care after a sexual assault. It fosters open, two-way dialogue, provides decision-making skills, and teaches how to recognize situations that may put one at risk, all using real-life, age-appropriate scenarios to teach risk-reduction strategies. A trained, experienced counselor is on-hand to field questions and handle any disclosures that may occur, with total confidentiality.
This program is a proactive response to the alarming rates of sexual assaults among this vulnerable age group. It has been put together by Abington Memorial Hospital’s Clinical Forensic Nurse Examiner Program, the Network of Victim Assistance of Bucks County, and a dedicated team of professional women from Soroptimist International of Indian Rock Information 215-355-7201.

 

United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps

Liberty Bell Squadron based at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base, Willow Grove
For boys and girls ages 11-18.
Program gives exposure especially to Navy and Coast Guard but also to Marines, Air Force, and Army.
Has potential to graduate dedicated members as Petty Officers (E-6 which is six ranks above where most enlisted people begin).
Requires one weekend/month, 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. for drills which encompass both classroom learning of military training and on-the-job training, such as working on airplanes, training at the fire house and with security as if cadets were regular military.
Cadets take sworn oath that is non-binding on minors.
Must attend one cadet military 10-day boot camp in summer (tailored to age)
Opportunities to explore, including traveling the world (no combat zones)
Parent Orientation available once a month.

Y Achievers

Mentorship program for minority youth in grades 5-12 
Placed in one of four levels: Young Achievers (grades 5-6), Tourist Achievers (grades 7-8), Teen Achievers (grades 9-10), and Future Leaders (grades11-12)
Young Achievers and Tourist Achievers meet at the Abington YMCA, 1073 Old York Road, Abington; Teen Achievers and Future Leaders meet at Drexel University.
Achievers help young people successfully prepare for life after high school through a dynamic curriculum to empower youth to set high educational standards, explore various career options, and develop the YMCA's character values.
Lead by Adult Achievers, Collegiate Achievers, and volunteers
Features bi-monthly meetings which include group discussion with guest speakers, hands-on projects, field trips, and work site tours.

Y Teen Leaders Club

Grades 7-12Mondays, 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Abington YMCA

Have an impact on your community! Teens develop and execute projects with a focus on improving their community. Weekly group meetings are used to plan projects and events. Some credit may be given toward community service hours.

Pictured here are teens and adults who made up four home repair work crews sent by Glenside United Church of Christ to rural Tennessee during summer, 2005 to participate in the Appalachia Service Project. The goal was to help make homes warmer, safer, and drier and involved heavy manual labor and construction skills.
