Weigh To Go for Kids

For children ages 9-13 and their parents or guardians.

Held at Abington Health - Schilling Campus, Willowood Building cafeteria
A registered dietitian will present a positive, hands-on approach to today’s eating, exercise, and esteem dilemmas
The Center for Parenting Education will also participate by facilitating discussions on related weight management topics with parents.

For Adults and Parents of Children and Adolescents with AD/HD
Do you or a family member suffer from AD/HD?  Do you want to learn more about AD/HD?
This interactive and educational workshop series will provide educational information and support for individuals and families who are dealing with AD/HD and are learning to navigate its challenges across the life span.  This unique program will include seven, two-hour interactive sessions.

Tools for Effective Discipline

For all parents of children 3 years through adolescence

Held at Roslyn Elementary School, 2565 Susquehanna Road, Roslyn
This popular workshop teaches disciplining techniques that allow you to remain calm and confident even when you must stop children from unacceptable behaviors.  Learn about the parenting style that uses discipline approaches that maintain your children's self-esteem and a healthy relationship between you and your children.  Also learn skills in rule making, handling protests, and alternatives to punishment.

First Steps to Grandparenting

Held at Abington Memorial Hospital, Lenfest Pavilion, Rooms P and G
Grandparents have a unique relationship with their grandchildren that brings a very special warmth and love to everyone’s life.   With it comes tremendous joy and sometimes unexpected questions about the kind of grandparent you want to be and how you should relate to your adult children.  Abington Memorial Hospital Family Practice physicians and staff from the Center for Parenting Education co-host this one session program focusing on baby care and other issues that new grandparents face.  Pre-registration is necessary.

Truths About Consequences

Wednesday, April 21, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Held at Copper Beech Elementary School; 825 Easton Road, Glenside
Consequences can be a very effective discipline tool to use, but it is often difficult to come up with the “right” one that will fit the situation.  Learn how to use consequences to teach your children what they need to learn when you discipline them and how to decide what the consequence should be.

When Your Toddler Erupts: Tackling Temper Tantrums

Temper tantrums seem to be a rite of passage for toddlers, but they confront parents with many challenges and frustrations.  Parents are often unprepared for the strong feelings that are generated (both in the child and the parent) and lack skills to manage the tantrums in a way that preserves the child’s self-esteem and their relationship with their child.  Learn why children have tantrums and the skills necessary to handle them.

Toilet Learning

Friday, June 4, 9:30–11:30 a.m.

Somewhere between two and four, children and their parents go through the process of learning to use the potty.  This can be an easy experience for parents and children if they know what to expect.  Learn ways to avoid power plays and make this time a smooth transition.  Join us for this insightful look at healthy approaches to this exciting and yet often frustrating and challenging milestone in your child’s life.

Children’s Health Center for Uninsured, Underinsured, & Medical Assistance

Provides primary health care to children from birth through age 21 who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medical Assistance.
Health Center staff takes time to listen and understand issues facing children and works with parents or caregivers to provide necessary follow-up care.
Services include: physical exams, care for sick children, sports physicals, immunizations, school physicals, vision and hearing screening, parenting education and support, home visits, 24-hour on-call

Parenting through Divorce

Research indicates that children of divorce fare best when conflict is minimal, their needs are given priority, and parents interact cooperatively with each other.
Two programs offered to teach skills to help children weather the storm of separation and divorce.
Group Seminars - These two sessions, four hours each, teach:
     How to help children adjust to separation/divorce
     Children's usual reactions to divorce
     How parents can avoid or decrease conflicts
     Skills to communicate effectively with children
     How to co-parent with one's ex-spouse to meet children's needs   
Cost: $200 for both sessions
Individual One-on-One Sessions - Parents meet individually with a Parenting Educator to address above issues and their personal concerns and situation Sessions are one hour Cost: $90/session

Personal Coaching

For parents of newborns through teens
     Are you a parent of a child with a challenging temperament?
     Do you feel that  you need help with discipline?
     Would you like to increase your confidence and your parenting skills?
     Do you sometimes feel out of control, or unsure of healthy ways to respond?
If you answered "yes" to any of the above, then Personal Parenting Coaching may be just what you need!
Featuring one-hour sessions with a certified Parenting Educator who can support and guide you as you learn about healthy ways to parent and to communicate more effectively with your children.   Often, two, or three sessions are enough to give you the support and information you need.
Cost:  1st session:               $75.00 for members of The Center for Parenting Education

B.I.L.Y. (Because I Love You) Support Group

This support group for parents with children of any age promotes structure, consequences, and consistency in raising children. The goal is to give parents hope and help them to react in new ways in order to effect change in their child's behavior.
First meets as large group, then breaks into smaller groups for parents of children with similar ages and challenges. Sponsored by Abington Memorial Hospital and run by parents who have experienced or are currently going through challenging times with their child.

No pass/fail skills or written exam is required.
Includes one-rescue and conscious obstructed airway skills.

Kids In Safety Seats (KISS)

With at least 30 different seatbelt systems in vehicles today, KISS teaches parents, grandparents, and other caretakers how to properly place a child in a size-appropriate car seat that is also correctly placed and installed in a car in order to reduce the risk of life-threatening injuries in an accident.
This program is provided by the Abington Police Department's Community Policing Division with support from Citizens And Police Together. Certified technicians provide instruction.

MOMS Club of Abington

Offers monthly meetings, age-based playgroups, kids’ activities, mom’s night out, a book club, park days, Meals for Moms, a monthly newsletter, and more. Also performs several service projects each year to benefit children in the community.
The MOMS Club of Abington is committed to supporting all members, whether they are full-time at-home parents, or if they work outside, or inside the home.

Play 'n Share: Baby's First Friend

This discussion group provides an opportunity for parents of infants and toddlers to share their experiences, issues and concerns.  Children are invited to play in the room, while parents talk.
