The “A Book That Shaped Me” Summer Essay Contest
For rising 5th and 6th students to reflect on a book that has made a personal impact on their lives.
Essays to be one page and submitted in person with an entry form available in the Children’s Department, Abington Free Library, 1030 Old York Road, Abington, and Roslyn Branch Library, 2412 Avondale Avenue, Roslyn. 
Deadline for submission:  August 12.
Prizes awarded to five finalists and one winner per state and to three overall grand prize winners to be selected by a panel of judges assembled by the Library of Congress Top winners will be invited to present their essays at the Library of Congress National Book Festival September 21-22 on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
Sponsored by The Library of Congress in conjunction with the Abington Township Public Libraries and other public libraries in the Mid-Atlantic region.

The Roly Poly

For ages 5-12
Friday, June 21, 11:00 a.m.-12:00 noon
Held at Roslyn Branch Library, 2412 Avondale Avenue, Roslyn
A hands-on program to explore a half-inch "bug" that really isn't a bug at all.    Learn where roly polies come from, how they grew, and why the are important in the ecosystem.
Led by Judy Groben, a Penn State Master Gardener volunteer.

Summer Pograms 

“Dig into Reading”
For Abington Township/Rockledge Borough children of all ages
Children are to read or be read to for 20 minutes or more per day and record their progress in a 
reading log.   
Participants become eligible to win prizes when they achieve certain reading goals.
Register any time.  Every child who registers will receive a free Rita’s water ice coupon and a place on the recognition wall at either Abington Free Library or the Roslyn Branch.  Reading prizes will be awarded through Monday, Sept. 9.

Abington/Roslyn Reads

Children who have completed kindergarten, grade 1 or 2 can practice reading with a teen buddy volunteer, have stories read to them, and select books to borrow with their young adult partner from grade 6-12
This program helps younger children practice reading and gain confidence in their reading ability.
