We recognize these two students for their outstanding contributions
to the community through their service activities. These Abington
Senior High School student seniors exemplify the very best in dedication
to serving our community. Many have greatly benefited from the hours
they have spent by these students helping others. There is no doubt
that these fine young women will continue their efforts in adult
life and be responsible and productive citizens. We applaud their
gift of their time and dedication to helping others and wish them
continued success in the future.
Bonnie McDevitt’s commitment to others is an inspiration. Bonnie has combined community service with high academic achievement. Considered one of the “top ten students with whom I have ever had the pleasure to work” by an Abington High School educator, Bonnie is Vice-President of the Key Club and Co-President of Baking for Breathing. She helped to start WAVE (Water Access Virtually Everywhere), and she’s involved with Reading Olympics, VOSH (Voluntary Optometric Services), and Knit Wits (knitting hats and scarves for the homeless). Through her service with Building with Books, she was one of two students chosen to travel to Mali, Africa this past summer to help build a school. For her community service, Bonnie received the Silver Medal from the Congressional Award Foundation and will receive the Gold Medal in the House of Representatives in June. Bonnie also has a black belt in karate, runs on the women’s track team, and plays the piano and violin. In February, she traveled to the Guatemalan rain forest to deliver eyeglasses with a team of doctors for Voluntary Optometric Services to Humanity. While there, she served as one of the translators. She is passionate in everything she does. Bonnie’s combination of intellect, work ethic, and care for others is unparalleled. We have no doubt that Bonnie will continue her efforts on behalf of others throughout her life.
Megan Rossi has a philosophy to be kind to everyone in this world and to give everybody a chance. She has incorporated this philosophy into her lifestyle so completely that it took much questioning to discover the many different areas in which she gives to her community. As a senior at Abington High School, Megan serves on the Executive Board of Student Council, is a member of the Honor Society, and has been an active member of the Key Club during her entire high school career. Her favorite Key Club activities include participation in the Special Olympics and creating the Pillow Polo Tournament, an athletic game that uses soft sticks and balls. The tournament is now an annual event that raises funds for research in Multiple Sclerosis, a disease that has touched the Rossi family. Megan organized more than100 students into a Polo tournament to have fun while raising $1,300. In the process, she educated the students and staff about MS. Megan comments that raising the money was wonderful, but knowing that everyone who participated made a difference in helping find a cure for this horrible disease was an even better feeling. Megan is a high scholastic achiever, holds two part-time jobs, and in her spare time helps out an elderly neighbor. Megan truly lives her philosophy of kindness, dedication to service, and empathy for others.
