We recognize these two students for their outstanding contributions
to the community through their service activities. These Abington
Senior High School studenteniors exemplify the very best in dedication
to serving our community. Many have greatly benefited from the hours
they have spent by these students helping others. There is no doubt
that these fine young women will continue their efforts in adult
life and be responsible and productive citizens. We applaud their
gift of their time and dedication to helping others and wish them
continued success in the future.
Jessica Greer Griffith is a remarkable young
woman who has a passion and a zest for making our community and
our world a better place. As an Executive Board member of the
Key Club, Jessica has shared many great ideas and suggestions
as well as organized and participated in numerous community activities,
including fundraisers for the Breathing Room, Tthe Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation, for Breast Cancer Awareness, and for an orphanage
in Bulgaria, desperately in need of medicines, vaccinations, and
vitamins. Although involved with many other activities, one outstanding
example of her commitment and dedication has taken place every
Friday for the last three years. During her lunch period, Jessica
is a water safety aide with students who have physical challenges.
Her perseverance and determination to see her visions through
to completion set her apart from others.
With a smile and tremendous enthusiasm, Jessica has touched many
lives. With more than 1000 hours of community service in the past
three years, Jessica has received the Presidential Gold Service
Award for the past two years, the Champion of Caring Award, and
the Ambassador of Caring Award. She and will receive the Presidential
Gold Medal in June. This fall, sShe will attend the Schreyers
Honors Program at the Pennsylvania State University this fall.
Valerie Sullivan is a sweet and caring young
woman, who has performed hundreds of hours of community service.
She is dedicated to helping others. Valerie makes at least six
artistic, technically perfect quilts each year for Quilts for
Kids at St. Christopher’s Hospital. Her passion is nutrition,
and her dedication to hunger related organizations is evident
by her volunteer work at Philabundance and the Metropolitan AIDS
Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance. She also volunteers four hours
each Saturday as a dance instructor. Her students have benefited
greatly from her encouragement and display of strong moral character.
Through her hard work and dedication she has achieved her personal
goals. She has traveled to distant environments to experience
a different way of living. Last summer, she climbed Mt. Washington
as part of a Congressional Award expedition. With all of her community
service, Valerie has found time to play the violin for nine years
with the school orchestra.
Valerie received a Silver Medal from the Congressional Award
Foundation, the Presidential Service Award, and the Harvard Book
Club Award and was named a National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist.
She will attend the Schreyers Honors Program at the Pennsylvania
State University this fall, where she plans to continue her community
service to others
