2005 Student Community Service Award Honorees
Faina Dunovich
Randolph Jackson Bill Schenk
We recognize these three students for their outstanding contributions
to the community through their service activities. These Abington
High School seniors exemplify the very best in dedication to serving
our community. Many have greatly benefited from the hours spent
by these students helping others. There is no doubt that these fine
young people will continue their efforts in adult life and be responsible
and productive citizens. We applaud their time and dedication to
helping others and wish them continued success in the future.
Faina is a thoughtful, competent, bright, and enthusiastic student
leader who is able to focus on local as well as global projects.
As a recipient of the Congressional Award, Faina set goals in voluntary
public service, physical fitness, and personal development and learned
about responsibility, trust, and organization. Besides working two
part-time jobs, some of her hundreds of hours of community service
have been for FADD (Friends Against Alcohol and Drugs), the American
Red Cross, and for VOSH (Voluntary Optometric Services), collecting
eyeglasses that will be recycled and personally delivered to impoverished
villages in Guatemala on April 22, 2005.
Randy’s outstanding commitment to community service has
culminated in various local, state and government awards and recognition
ceremonies. Randy received the Pennsylvania Governor’s Citizen
Crime Prevention Award this past fall for five years of contributing
his time and talent to the Abington Police Department and the Abington
Police Athletic League. Randy is most proud of his time coaching
the PAL basketball team at Willow Hill. He has been master of ceremony
for the CPYA Rock-a-thon, participated in the 24-Hour Relay Challenge,
and is a four year member of Abington High School Marching Band.
Randy is an Eagle Scout candidate and a member of the Abington Senior
High School Key Club. He has also spent many hours playing the roles
of police mascot “McGruff” and D.A.R.E.’s lion
“Daren.”
Bill approaches challenges with enthusiasm, whether they are in
school or in the community. Besides working several days a week,
Bill is a member of the McKinley Fire Company and believes there
is “nothing more rewarding or more fulfilling than firefighting.”
He has developed a passion that has led him to become certified
in Firefighting I, CPR/First Aid, and Hazmat Awareness. These certifications
have led him to numerous other courses as well as hundreds of hours
of service to our community. This fall, Bill hopes to pursue a very
specialized Fire Protection Engineering program, in college.
