2006 Recognition Reception Honoree:
Ed Micciolo

Ed Micciolo has been a resident of Abington Township for 35 years. A four-year member of the United States Marine Corps from 1967 to 1971, he began to work for Abington Township following his discharge. For the past 18 years, he has served as Director of Public Works with responsibilities for Abington Township highways, traffic signals, and vehicle maintenance.

Ed is a tireless and dedicated volunteer when it comes to the youth in our community. His involvement in the Roslyn Boys and Girls Club for more than 25 years, where he served as its president for seven years, is legendary. Following the devastation in our community from the flood of 1996 and the total destruction of the Roslyn clubhouse, Ed spearheaded both a financial and physical rebirth of the club. Weekends were spent working with other volunteers to build a better and bigger clubhouse. Ed also helped change the club from a strictly sports oriented group to an organization that serves the entire community year-round. The community center is now utilized by youth, local organizations, and senior citizens, with an emphasis on education. An after-school weekday program provides homework assistance and recreation time for elementary school children, and a summer day camp keeps kids busy with positive activities.

When the Abington Police Athletic League (PAL) was formed in 2001, Ed was elected to the Executive Board as vice president and helped to launch and oversee operations for the first PAL site in Abington Township. Currently, he is Commissioner of the Montgomery County Baseball League. Ed has served as a coach, baseball commissioner, manager, president, treasurer, and general troubleshooter for organizations that have benefited literally thousands of youth in Abington Township’s baseball and soccer leagues. His personality and attitude inspire others to volunteer their time and money to serve our youth. He serves as a role model through his involvement with the youth and often intervenes when they make the wrong choices, helping to guide them back on track.

For the past several years, Ed has also organized the car show portion of the annual Roslyn Valley Car Show and Fall Festival. As a general rule, Ed is at one of three places; home, work, or the Roslyn Boys and Girls Club. It doesn’t matter what the job is; Ed is always willing to jump in and get it done. “It’s for the kids, that’s all that matters” and “Just do it, whatever it takes, to get the job done” are familiar phrases in almost every conversation you might have with him. When asked what he thinks makes Abington and Rockledge such strong and vital communities, Ed says, “It is the community spirit that keeps it vibrant and strong. The powerful sense of family values and the fervent pride we have in our community make it a community that cares. We acknowledge that the youth of our community are our future and that our opportunity to build their character and values are essential for the fulfillment of their potential.”

Ed continues, “My vision for Abington Township is to see that everything that has been established in the past for our youth and our community becomes even stronger and that not one young person falls through the cracks. I would like to see more parents involved with the youth of our area as well as, with their own children. To this end, I would like to see every child understand that he has the potential to mold his own future and that every young person knows there is someone out there who cares about him or her.”

In addition to this ACT recognition, Ed has received the Roslyn Boys and Girls Club Service to Youth Award, the Montco Baseball Service to Youth Award, and the Karen and Butch Beal Distinguished Service Award. The field at Roslyn Park was recently named “Micciolo Field” in honor of Ed’s commitment to their youth and the community.

Ed resides in Abington Township with his wife Donna of 31 years. He is most proud of his three children: Michael, Terry, and Gina who are all Abington High School graduates. Ed enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and playing poker.
