Recognition
Reception Honoree
James
F. McCaffery
James McCaffery
came to Abington School District as a social studies teacher at
North Campus (currently Abington Junior High School) in 1966 after
graduating from Syracuse University, serving as an officer in the
United States Air Force, and receiving his Master's Degree from
the University of Pennsylvania. For Jim, this 1966 move was to be
"temporary." Thirty-six years later, he became the Superintendent
of one of the top school districts in the country.
With Jim's ascent
to the highest position in the district came distinction and honor.
He always understood the virtue of public education for all. Under
his tutelage, many Abington schools were named National Blue Ribbon
Schools of Excellence, and Abington Junior High School was selected
for a visit by the Pennsylvania Attorney General because of its
D.A.R.E. program. On three occasions Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge
and Mrs. Michele Ridge selected Abington to showcase excellence
in safe schools. Under Jim's leadership further acclaim was noted
in visits by Secretary of Education Riley and Governors Bush and
Ridge during an educational forum in Abington with Jim as moderator.
Notably, Jim and Abington Chief of Police William Kelly forged a
relationship between school and police that continues to serve as
a model of community relationships at their best.
Jim believes
that one cannot separate public schools from the communities they
serve. Jim sees the citizens and young people as the clients who
are best served when all elements of the community work in concert.
He has brought to the Abington and Rockledge communities his vision
of diversity and commitment to youth, one that he believes can be
a model for the nation. Jim believes that all children must have
equal access to educational programs and community resources.
Jim has received
many awards that recognize his vision and commitment to education.
These have included the Black Women's Educational Alliance Honoree,
Citizens for Progress Achievement Award, Speak Out Liberty Award,
the Willow Grove NAACP Educator of the Year Award, and the Abington
Board of Commissioners' Award. He enjoys music, theater, and travel.
