Recognition
Reception Honoree
Robert Chavous
Robert Chavous'
extensive list of awards, honors, and volunteer activities keenly
reflects his statement that "I believe the reason (I was spared
while serving in the Vietnam War) was for me to give back to my
community all that I can." His commitment to help Abington
Township and the Borough of Rockledge maintain a safe and caring
community is coupled with his desire to provide youth with positive
opportunities through various community partnerships and to rid
the township of all drugs and illegal activities.
A 1982 graduate
of Community College, Bob was the owner and president of Robert
B. Chavous, Inc. from 1983-1998. He is proud to be a journeyman
electrician and member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical
Workers Local Union #98.
Bob received
the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Air Medal, and Combat Infantryman's
Badge for his gallantry and actions during the Vietnam War. He has
received awards of distinction for his involvement with the Boy
Scouts of America, including a Special Congressional Recognition
Award of Outstanding Achievement in scouting as a leader and scoutmaster,
and the Pennsylvania Senate Outstanding Achievement Award. He has
also received the Youth Leadership Award at Seventh Day Adventist
Church in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. Other activities and awards
relate to volunteer activities as a monthly food distributor for
low-income families, participation in the Abington Township Citizens
Police Academy, and volunteer work with the Abington Police Department.
In 1990 Bob
was ordained a Deacon in the McKinley Memorial Baptist Church. He
has extended his ministerial duties to the National Association
for the Advancement of Colored People where he is the ministerial
and military veterans liaison. He is a committeeman for Ward 5-1.
Bob enjoys
making walking sticks and canes, world traveling, church activities,
and family genealogy. A graduate of Perkasie High School, Bob and
his wife, Elizabeth (Betty), live in Willow Grove. They enjoy a
very busy lifestyle devoted to Abington Township and the Borough
of Rockledge, and thrive on raising their four children: John, Diane,
Dawn, and Tiffany.
