Sergeant Dan Buckley

Dan Buckley is single and lives in Roslyn, Pennsylvania. He was born in May, 1957 in Long Branch, New Jersey. His family moved to Pennsylvania and bought a home in North Hills. Dan attended Queen of Peace School and North Hills Elementary School. He continued in the Abington School District and graduated in 1975 from Abington Senior High School. After graduation Dan worked in the Abington School District as a teacher’s aide during the 1975-1976 school year. He left the district in 1976 and was employed by International Computa Print Corporation working in the division that produced documents for the U.S. Patent Office. In 1978 he was hired as a probationary police officer in Abington Township. Dan served as a patrol officer until 1983 when he became one of the first four K-9 dog handlers in Abington. He attended K-9 school in Philadelphia with his first K-9 partner Boss, and later in Norristown in 1990 with his partner Barry. In 1998 he was offered a position in the Community Policing Division, which he accepted. In May of 2000 Dan was promoted to Sergeant and continues to work in the Community Policing Division.

Dan and his K-9 partners have received numerous commendations from the United States Police K-9 Association and the Abington Police Department for apprehending criminals. He also developed the concept of “Crime Prevention Stores,” an outreach program in local communities in Abington. His active and strong interest in the community was continued in his work in the development of the curriculum for the Abington Caring Community Academy (A.C.C.A.); a partnership with the Abington School District which provided at-risk and low socio-economic students with access to social skills development, preventative drug and alcohol lessons, and positive feelings and attitude lessons. Although this program was funded by a police grant, monies were not always available for all of the supplies and equipment needed. Dan readily bought, anonymously, from his own monies, items that the students used such as bicycles, food, etc. Additionally, after the rise of school violence in other parts of the country, Dan established a toll-free tip line, 1-877-APD-TIPS, to report acts of school violence. Dan has also received honors from the Roslyn Fire Company for Community Service, The Montgomery County Black Law Enforcement Association for Community Service, and the Willow Grove Community Development Corporation for Community Development.

Dan stated that he has always believed that each of us has an obligation to give back to the community in whatever way we can, either through hands-on participation and/or financial contribution. He believes that Abington and Rockledge are strong and vital communities due to the strong concept of volunteerism, the leadership of its varied organizations, and the willingness of the members of the Abington community to get involved and cooperate with religious, governmental, and charitable agencies of the community, including our exceptional police department, school district, and the all-volunteer fire department.

Dan would like the PAL organization to become even stronger and obtain its own center where it can serve as the hub that provides services to the young people of the township and borough. He believes that future goals for community youth should involve tutoring younger children in schoolwork, leading youth groups in their religious sector, becoming a junior firefighter, etc. Dan feels that this involvement leads to a strong sense of belonging and will produce leadership qualities in our youth.

Dan was a member of the North Hills Town Watch, volunteered as a baseball coach for the Ardsley/North Hills Athletic Association, and currently serves on the executive board of C.A.P.T. (Citizens and Police Together). He also serves on the board of the Helping Hand Foundation and is co-director of the 24 Hour Relay Challenge. Additionally, Dan has involvement with the Roslyn Boys & Girls Club and the Roslyn Fire Company. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys fishing and hunting. He has a second home in northeast Pennsylvania where he can pursue these activities. Dan loves dogs, especially german shepherds, and his current dog is named Caesar.
