Recognition
Reception Honoree
Robert
"Bob" P. Allmond, Jr.
Robert "Bob"
P. Allmond, Jr. is the epitome of a dedicated police officer who
is truly concerned about the well-being of the residents of the
community in which he lives and works. He has devoted his career
and his personal life to making Abington Township a healthy place
for children to live and grow. Bob's interest in community service
began when he was in high school, where he was inspired by two friends
who were junior volunteer firefighters. Seeing what great satisfaction
they received from serving the community, Bob began to volunteer
at his local Fire Department and eventually he became involved with
the rescue squad. As a result of that experience, he got "hooked"
on serving the community and decided to become a police officer.
A graduate
of Bensalem High School, Bob has been a member of the Abington Township
Police Department since 1986. He began his career as a patrol officer,
becoming a Community Policing Officer in 1992 and a Juvenile Detective
in 1998. Through Bob's work on the police force and through his
personal commitment to the community, he has had the opportunity
to exert a tremendous and positive impact on young people in Abington.
The list of youth-oriented events and programs with which Bob has
been involved seems endless. As a member of Citizens and Police
Together (C.A.P.T.) since 1992, he has volunteered at countless
events in the Township and has facilitated and chaperoned many youth
activities in the Willow Grove and Roslyn areas.
One of the
most demanding volunteer positions that Bob took on was to co-direct
the 24-Hour Relay Challenge during its initial years. This event
has raised over $250,000 that has been used to provide funding for
youth programs throughout Abington Township and Rockledge Borough.
It was Bob who first brought the idea of the Relay to Abington and
went through the initial training to mobilize community resources
to coordinate the event. Bob has been the director of the Glenside
Halloween Safety Program in which over 3,000 community members have
participated. He has coached soccer at Roslyn's Boys and Girls Club
and has volunteered and supported the Abington Police Athletic League
(PAL). He has served on the Governing Board of Cub Scout Pack #48
based at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Glenside and is a member
of the Advisory Board of the Parenting Center at Abington.
Bob has
received numerous awards and honors that acknowledge the contributions
he has made to this community: the NAACP "Community Service
Award," the VFW "Officer of the Year Award," and
the International Association of Chief's of Police/Parade Magazine
"Officer of the Year Award."
Bob believes that Abington and Rockledge are strong and vital for
a number of reasons: the participation and active involvement of
residents; the talented leadership of key stakeholders who are very
devoted and who work well together toward the common goal of keeping
Abington a great place "to live, work, and play;" the
excellence of our School District; and the proactive and service-oriented
nature of our Police Department.
As a goal
for Abington to strive towards, Bob hopes that our community will
provide outreach programs to the many new residents who are moving
into our area so that they can be educated about the many fine organizations
in the Township in which they can participate. He believes that
through helping residents to feel connected to the community, citizens
can be assured that Abington will continue to be safe and strong
for years to come. Concerning community goals for our youth, Bob
believes that it is important that we provide opportunities for
young people to develop the skills necessary to serve the community
and be productive citizens. By developing situations in which they
can participate in intergenerational collaboration, we will empower
them to contribute valuable ideas today to create positive change
for tomorrow. He also is a strong advocate of teaching our children
to embrace diversity by creating opportunities for dialogue and
interaction among different groups. "By accepting differences
and sharing commonalities, our children can live in a community
that acknowledges the value of all people."
Bob lives in Glenside with his wife Debbi. He has four children,
Valerie, James, Castine, and Amanda. In his free time, he enjoys
attending performances of the Philadelphia Orchestra, attending
church, and traveling in the U.S in his motor home. He is an avid
Phillies fan.
