2008 Citizens That Care Recognition Reception

Four individuals, one local organization, and two students were honored at the 7th annual Citizens That Care Recognition Reception of the Abington Community Taskforce (ACT). The three honorees, Barbara D'Ambrosio, Thomas J. Smerke, and Oscar P. Vance, Jr., and the organization, The Breathing Room Foundation, Inc., were honored for the many ways in which they have made outstanding efforts to promote the well-being of children and youth and those who support them in the Abington-Rockledge community. The first ever Community Builder Award was presented posthumously to George R. "Hank" Haines for his myriad contributions to the greater community. Two Abington Senior High School graduating seniors were presented with $500 awards for their noteworthy community service work.

ACT Co-Chair Saundra Freedman welcomed all in attendance to a very special evening to celebrate all that is good in the community. Teresa Montanaro addressed the gathering, highlighting ACT's unique role in the Abington-Rockledge community

Abington Police Chief William Kelly and Abington Assistant Superintendent of Schools Dr. Leigh Altadonna served as masters of ceremony, highlighting the accomplishments of each honoree. All emphasized that the community’s work on behalf of children, youth, and families must be on-going as there will always be those who struggle with problems but thankfully there are adults who care about their well-being.
