Yom Kippur or Day of Atonement.
This Jewish holy day is the most solemn day in the Jewish
calendar. It begins at sunset on October 1 and is said by
many to be the most important holiday of the Jewish year.
On this day, Jews are to atone for their sins between them
and God during the past year and devote themselves to prayer
(usually in the synagogue), fasting, and repentance. No work
is to be performed on this day. Yom Kippur occurs on the 10th
day of Tishri. |

Sukkot or Feast of Tabernacles
is a Jewish festival of thanksgiving, harvest, and the remembrance
of the Jews who wandered in the wilderness and lived in temporary
shelters after their exodus from Egypt. The word "Sukkot"
means "booths," and refers to the temporary dwellings
that Jews are commanded to live in during this holiday. The
fifth day after Yom Kippur, it begins at sunset on October 17.
Sukkot lasts for seven days. The two days following the festival
are separate holidays, Shemini Atzeret and Simkhat Torah, but
are commonly thought of as part of Sukkot. |

Reformation Day
This marks the anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant
Reformation on October 31, 1517. It commemorates the day when
Dr. Martin Luther, a Roman Catholic monk and university professor,
posted his Ninety-Five Theses on the door of the Castle Church
in Wittenberg, Germany. This act was meant to start an academic
debate but triggered the movement in world history known as
the Reformation. This day is especially observed in Lutheran
churches.
Halloween This is the evening before All
Saints or All Hallows Day. Traditionally it is an occasion
for carving pumpkins ad masquerading for treats. Click "Things
To Do" for community Halloween parties and events. |
