Ash Wednesday This
is the first day of Lent, a period of fasting and penitence
observed by Christians. Many choose to go to church to have
ashes imposed on their forehead in the sign of the cross.
This symbolizes that they belong to Jesus who died on a cross
and reminds them of their mortality. The ashes come from burning
palms from the previous Palm Sunday.
Lent This 40-day period begins in Western
Christian churches on Ash Wednesday and ends on March 25,
the Saturday before Easter. In the Roman Catholic Church,
Lent ends at sundown on March 23, the Thursday before Easter,
with the beginning of the Lord's Supper. Sundays are not counted
as part of the 40 days because they commemorate the Resurrection.
Lent calls Christians to a period of reflection and repentance
in preparation for Easter.

World Day of Prayer The
first Friday of March has been designated World Day of Prayer.
It is a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions
and from more than 170 countries and regions, who come together
in places of worship around the world to observe a common
day of prayer each year. Men, women, and children are all
invited to these services. The same divine service is used
in every place. It promotes fellowship, understand, and action.
Check with local churches for area services. This year's theme
is "In Signs of the Times," with a focus on South
Africa.

Purim The most festive
of Jewish holidays, Purim is a time of prizes, noisemakers,
costumes and treats when the Jewish people celebrate a major
victory over oppression when they were living in Persia and
were saved from extermination. This story is recounted in the
Megillah, the scroll of the story of Esther or the Biblical
book of Esther. Purim takes place on the fourteenth and fifteenth
days of Adar, the twelfth month of the Jewish calendar.

St. Patrick's Day Commemorates
the patrol saint of Ireland who served as this country's bishop
for 30 years and died on March 17, 461. Originally a Roman Catholic
holy day, it has evolved into more of a secular celebration.
It has been celebrated in the United States since 1737. A traditional
symbol of the day is the shamrock which St. Patrick used to
explain the Trinity of how the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
could all exist as separate elements of the same entity |
