World Day of Prayer. It is a worldwide movement of Christian
women of many traditions and from more than 170 countries
and regions, who come together in places of worship around
the world to observe a common day of prayer each year. Men,
women, and children are all invited to these services. It
promotes fellowship, understand, and action. Check with local
churches for area services. This year's theme is "In

St.
Patrick's Day Commemorates the patrol saint of Ireland who
served as this country's bishop for 30 years and died on March
17, 461. Originally a Roman Catholic holy day, it has evolved
into more of a secular celebration. It has been celebrated in
the United States since 1737. A traditional symbol of the day
is the shamrock which St. Patrick used to explain the Trinity
of how the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit could all exist as separate
elements of the same entity |

Palm
Sunday is observed by Christians to remember Jesus
triumphant arrival at the holy city of Jerusalem. The crowds
greeted him by waving palm branches. Today, Christians usually
begin Palm Sunday services with a palm procession. Palm Sunday
marks the beginning of Holy Week leading to Easter.

Maundy
Thursday or Holy Thursday is a day when Christians
attend services to remember the Last Supper when Jesus celebrated
the Passover with his disciples and gave the sacrament of Holy
Communion. |

Good
Friday, the most somber day of the Christian calendar,
is observed by Christians the Friday before Easter and commemorates
the crucifixion, death, and entombment of Jesus Christ. While
Christians may observe the solemnity of the entire day, many
especially focus on the three hours between 12:00 noon and 3:00
p.m. when Christ hung on the cross.
Purim The
most festive of Jewish holidays, Purim is a time of prizes,
noisemakers, costumes and treats when the Jewish people celebrate
a major victory over oppression when they were living in Persia
and were saved from extermination. This story is recounted
in the Megillah, the scroll of the story of Esther or the
Biblical book of Esther. Purim takes place on the fourteenth
and fifteenth days of Adar, the twelfth month of the Jewish
calendar.

Easter
Vigil is observed on the Saturday between Good Friday
and Easter. Traditionally, new Christians are baptized at this
service. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil
services form the Triduum of Holy Week services. |
| 27 |
Easter,
the highest point on the Christian calendar, is the celebration
of Christ’s resurrection from death to win for the faithful
eternal life that is observed the first Sunday following the
first full moon that occurs on or after the vernal (spring)
equinox. |
