Feast of the Epiphany or Three
Kings Day The first day of the Christian church season
of Epiphany occurs the day after the 12th day of Christmas and
is known as Three Kings Day in the Hispanic culture and parts
of Europe. On this day, Christians remember the three wise men
who came to present gifts to the Christ child, thereby “making
know” or “revealing” (the meaning of the word
epiphany) to the world Jesus as Lord and King. |

Id al-Adha On this Muslim holy day known
as the Feast of Sacrifice, Moslems attend a service in their
mosque and those who are not pilgrims perform a ritual slaughter
of a sheep to commemorate the ransom (animal) God provided
when Abraham was about to sacrifice his son. This day marks
the end of the Pilgrimage or hajj rites at Mina, Saudi Arabia,
near Mecca, and is celebrated by Muslims throughout the world. |

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
This day observes the birthday of this civil rights
leader, minister, and winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize,
who was assassinated April 4, 1968. The people of America are
called to remember the injustices that Dr. King fought and to
continue to right wrongs so that people of all races may enjoy
freedom, equality, and dignity. It is also a time to remember
the message of change through nonviolence. This year’s
theme is: “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not A Day
Off!” For details of Abington Township’s 21st Annual
Memorial Service, see “Special Events.” |

Chinese New Year 2006 is
the year of the Dog. Chinese New Year begins with the new moon
and ends with the full moon 15 days later on Lantern Day. It
is determined based on a combination of lunar and solar movements.
A month is 29.5 days long. An extra month is added to the Chinese
calendar every 7 years in a 19-year cycle. New Year’s
Eve and New Year’s Day are celebrated with family as a
time or reunion and thanksgiving. Departed ancestors are remembered
with great respect because they laid the foundation for the
family’s fortune and glory. Their presence is acknowledged
at a New Year’s Eve feast. |
