New Year’s Day
TEMPLE DAY   Many Buddhists of all traditions pay their respects and pray for good fortune for the new year at the temple.
Emancipation Proclamation Anniversary In 1853, President Lincoln formally issued the emancipation Proclamation freeing the slaves.

Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God Roman Catholic Holy Day celebrates the motherhood of Mary, mother of Jesus, proclaimed as the son of God by Christians.
6 Feast of the Epiphany or Three Kings Day The first day of the Christian church season of Epiphany occurs the day after the 12th day of Christmas and is known as Three Kings Day in the Hispanic culture and parts of Europe. On this day, Western Christians remember the three wise men who came to present gifts to the Christ child, thereby “making know” or “revealing” (the meaning of the word epiphany) to the world Jesus as Lord and King.  In the Eastern Christian Church, this day is known as Theophany and celebrates the manifestation of Jesus as Christ.

MUHARRAM  The month of Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic liturgical year. The first day of the month, al-Hijra, remembers the migration of Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. It also marks the beginning of the ten-day Shi’ite Remembrance of Muharram, a period of intense grief and mourning of the martyrdom of Hussein, the son of Ali and grandson of Muhammad.

ASHURA  A day of fasting observed on the 10th day of the month of Muharram to celebrate Moses’ exodus from Egypt. For Shi’a Muslims, it also marks the climax of the ten-day Remembrance of Muharram, which mourns the martyrdom of Hussein at the Battle of Kerbala in 680 CE.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day This day observes the birthday of this civil rights leader, minister, and winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, who was assassinated April 4, 1968. The people of America are called to remember the injustices that Dr. King fought and to continue to right wrongs so that people of all races may enjoy freedom, equality, and dignity. It is also a time to remember the message of change through nonviolence. This year’s theme is: “Remember! Celebrate! Act! UN HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY  Annual international day of commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust coinciding with the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp in 1945.
