In November 2002, the Abington Board of Commissioners adopted the
No Place for Hate project of the Anti-Defamation
League. This project is designed to help communities grow stronger
and become better equipped to deal with issues of bigotry and prejudice.
It emphasizes ways in which people are more alike than different.
This initiative is properly implemented when a community is not
dealing with a crisis issue but is able to examine where it stands
and prepare for potentialities in a proactive and preventative way.
The Abington Community Taskforce added its endorsement to this project
in early 2003.
As part of Abington's No Place for Hate proclamation,
the community must undertake three related activities in the project's
first year. Abington has committed to four activities. First, the
Abington Township Police Department under Chief William Kelly has
committed to hate crimes training. Second, a rapid response team
comprising representation from all sectors of the Township is being
formed and trained. Third, a speakers bureau has been established
to make No Place for Hate representatives available to speak
to community groups and organizations. And fourth, a community calendar
of ethnic and religious holidays and days of observance is posted
here on ACT's web site to promote education and understanding about
the various days of observance and celebration that take place in
a diverse community such as Abington-Rockledge. |

Flag Day This day for patriotic observance commemorates June 14, 1777 when the Stars and Stripes was adopted by the Continental Congress. Inspired by three decades of state and local celebrations in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Flag Day was officially established by a proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. After this proclamation, it was celebrated in communities for years until it became a national day of observance; on August 3rd, 1949, President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day. |
